Concerts

Spring Concert

The Really Terrible Orchestra Of the Triangle (RTOOT) performed on Wednesday 19 May 2010 in Hill Hall Auditorium on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill. Details are found here.

Show in Cary

We also put on a show in Cary’s Bond Park at the Sertoma Bandshell on Sunday, 16 May at 3:00 pm. This was a fun free outdoor concert attended by around 250 people. The highlight of the program was probably our rendition of Beethoven’s
Ruins of Athens overture, during which the brass players attacked and appropriately ruined, a set that bore a striking resemblance to Athens (Greece).

Documentary on RTOOT

The Really Terrible Orchestra Of the Triangle (RTOOT) is featured in a
documentary produced by Kim Best as part of her studies in Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies. This work was presented on Friday, 21 May, 7:00-9:00 pm at the Richard White lecture hall on Duke’s East Campus. The piece is a great picture of RTOOT at its present state.

RTOOT Appears at Durham Armory
Friday, 17 July at 6:00 pm

The evening began with an incredible feature performance by The Really Terrible Orchestra Of the Triangle (RTOOT), joined by the Scene of the Crime Rovers (Durham's own community street band). RTOOT’s presentation began with the “Summertime Ballgame Singalong” led by
Philip van Leith de Jeude. Then Alison Nack, one of RTOOT’s viola players, presented her “Poulet string quartet” performing the Chicken Reel (Tempo di Barnyard). Other members of Les Poulets are Ted Wagner, 1st violin, Katherine Melling, 2nd violin, and Jim Dietz on cello. Next on the program were our unusual, or possibly quite unique, duo of tuba player Trish Weaver and English Horn player Charles Elliot, entertaining the crowd with “Autumn Leaves” and “Greensleeves”.

My Strow Hobgood then made his way to the keyboard where he & songleader Philip van Leith de Jeude got the crowd going with “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and an abbreviated version of “Lady Madonna”. The entire The Really Terrible Orchestra Of the Triangle then joined keyboard and singers with “When I’m Sixty-Four”.

Next on the program was the Watermusic Suite No. 1 or 2 (there was some debate) and as the terrible sound ensued, the orchestra was joined one-by-one by members of the Scene of the Crime Rovers, playing all kinds of non-traditional orchestral instruments such as e-flat sousaphone, melodica, baritone, and miles of percussion instruments. Needless to say,
Handel improved greatly by the addition of our partners in crime.

Finally, the crowd got moving with a rousing performance of the SOC Rovers dance tune, Slide/Squirm/Wiggle. My Stroh Hobgood donned a shocking pink cape and silly Seuss hat and attemped some moves.

Following the performances everyone was invited to join in an interactive drum circle or at the found sound instrument making table.

The evening culminated in a rousing performance by the
“Everybody Plays Instant Orchestra”- a drum circle and melodic instrument jam for community members with their instrument, voice or homemade percussion. Music Explorium provided drums and percussion to play, and any number of youngsters enjoyed conducting the assembled multitudes.

RTOOT Members Perform at Wake County Farmer’s Market

Members of The Really Terrible Orchestra Of the Triangle (RTOOT) participated in the Grand Opening of the Western Wake County Farmer’s Market on Saturday, 30 May 2009. The orchestra opened with the coda of Strauss’ “Beautiful Blue Danube”, after which a bassoon duo, a tuba and English horn duo, a Bluegrass duo, and other ensembles performed. The entire orchestra reconvened with the entire “Marche Slave” of Tchaikovsky, and for the closing number the crowd was invited to join in on the “Summertime Ballgame Singalong”. A lively audience listened with great joy and seemed to be having as much fun as the members of the orchestra, if possible.
